The process
Print onto sublimation transfer paper, then heat-transfer the design into compatible polyester fabric using a heat press.
From ink to printed fabric
Print the artwork
A Mimaki printer prints your design onto sublimation transfer paper supplied by EXT Fabrics. Tacky or non-tacky paper is selected to suit the fabric and production setup.
Heat-transfer to fabric
The printed paper and polyester fabric are fed together through a rotary heat press. Temperature, pressure and transfer time are set for the selected materials.
Color becomes part of the fabric
Heat turns the sublimation dye into a gas, allowing it to diffuse into the polyester fibers. As the fabric cools, the color remains within the fibers rather than forming a surface layer.
Separate and rewind
After transfer, the used paper separates from the fabric. The printed fabric is rewound onto an EXT 3-inch core, ready for the next production step.
Optional cut & sew
Need finished garments? Cutting and sewing can be arranged through Stadium Legends in California. This is a separate service from purchasing ink or printed fabric.
This overview describes sublimation transfer printing. Direct-to-fabric sublimation uses a different printing workflow. Always follow the printer, ink, fabric and heat-press manufacturers’ instructions.
